(Teicoplanin for Injection 200mg / 400mg)

INDICATIONS

  • Skin and Soft Tissue infections
  • Urinary Tract infections
  • Lower Respiratory Tract infections
  • Joint and Bone infections
  • Septicaemia
  • Endocarditis
  • Peritonitis

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Total daily dose for adults: 3.375 g every 6 hours.
  • Should be administered by slow IV infusion over 30 minutes

DURATION OF THERAPY

Adult Dose

Moderate infections:

  • Loading dose: 400mg IM/IV injection on the first day
  • Maintenance dose: 200mg IM/IV injection daily

Severe infections:

  • Loading dose: Three 400mg IV injections, administered 12 hours
  • Maintenance dose: 400mg injection IV/IM daily

Duration of Therapy

  • Duration of therapy is determined by the type and severity of infection and the clinical response of the patient.
  • In Endocarditis and Osteomyelitis, treatment for 3 weeks or longer is recommended

Teicoplanin versus Vancomycin

  • Total adverse events, nephrotoxicity and red man syndrome were significantly less frequent with Teicoplanin as compared to Vancomycin .
  • VanB phenotype is more common among glycopeptide-resistant Enterococcus faecalis; this exhibit resistance to Vancomycin, but not Teicoplanin .
  • Teicoplanin is as effective as Vancomycin, and it has superior tolerability along with advantages such as once daily bolus administration, IM use, and lack of requirement of routine serum monitoring
